Sony sells off SOE, new company will now make games for Xbox

Sony has made the decision to sell off Sony Online Entertainment to investment firm Columbus Nova. The studio will continue to operate as normal, but will now be an independent developer and will now go be known as ‘Daybreak Game Company’.

The studio is the developer of such titles like DC Universe Online, Planetside, EverQuest and H1Z1, all of which have been popular titles on PlayStation and PC. Now that the studio is no longer associated with Sony, the developer was keen to point out that they can’t wait to now be able to bring their IP’s to Xbox.

“Can’t wait to make Xbox games,” in a Tweet earlier yesterday.

The developer was keen to point out that the sale will not affect any projects and that it is “business as usual” the dev said in a post on Reddit.

“In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition. It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.”

“All of our games are still here and will continue to be.” Tweeted Smedley yesterday afternoon.

GameOnDaily Opinion: The sale has come as a little bit of a surprise to be honest, though when you think about it makes sense. With Sony having financial troubles outside of the gaming market it makes perfect business to trim the fat and sell the company especially when the games will still be available on its console, it’s a win win. It’s also good news for Xbox fans who can look forward to some decent titles like DC Universe Online and H1Z1.

GameOnDaily Opinion: Nothing really great this week, most of the Deals with Gold games can all be found for cheaper in the shops and TWD Survival Instinct is utter shite at any price. As for the THQ all I can really say is that this stuff has been on sale many times before. It’s a mixed bag really, there is some great games like Darksiders 2 (which everyone should have got free some months back ) but there is some real tripe like Jeopardy.

Netflix believes new versions of PS4 and Xbox One will release later this year

The PS4 and Xbox One could be seeing revised versions by the end of this year according to online entertainment streaming service Netflix.

During a press conference, Chief product officer Neil Hunt states that Sony “promised” that it will release a revised version of its hardware to increase the video output to 4k.

Forbes sought clarification from Netflix, but the site stated that it “clearly it isn’t in a position to speak definitively on Sony’s plans, [Hunt] believes that when both the PS4 and Xbox One consoles do their traditional two-year hardware refresh (which would be due around October or November) they will add the necessary components to deliver 4K video playback”.

Sony have said in response to the claims “Support for high-resolution 4K output for still images and movie content is in consideration, but there are no further details to share at this time.”

Sony did confirm to Forbes that “the PS4 does not currently support 4K output for gaming”.

A few things would need to be changed to the machines if they were to provide support for 4k. According to Forbes an additional chip would be required in order to support Netflix and Amazon’s HEVC 4K UHD streaming format and 4K’s HDCP 2.2 copy protection protocols. The HDMI ports on the consoles would also need an upgrade to HDMI 2.0 if 4K playback were to be offered.

Microsoft has declined to comment as they always do.

GameOnDaily Opinion: What’s important to point out is that this isn’t a change that will enable 4K gaming just the 4k video input. It wouldn’t be a surprise if versions of the PS4 and Xbox One were released later this year. The PS4 I wouldn’t expect to change to much aside from the obvious changes, it may offer some new colours but I expect that to be it. Xbox One may get a resize as it’s been one of the issues it’s been mocked on since its reveal.
